Getting a circle crop that actually looks right
A circular crop throws away the corners of a square, which is roughly 21% of the picture. Whatever sits near an edge disappears, so the framing that worked for a rectangular photo usually does not survive the circle unchanged.
Centre the subject before you crop
This tool crops from the centre of the image. If your subject sits off to one side, square it up first in the image cropper, then bring it back here. Two quick steps beat fighting one.
Leave headroom
For a face, aim to have the top of the head comfortably inside the circle rather than grazing it. A portrait cropped tight to the crown reads as cramped at avatar size, where the image may be displayed at 40 pixels across.
Transparent PNG or a solid fill?
Export a transparent PNG when you do not know what will sit behind the image - a website, a slide, a document. Most platforms mask avatars to a circle themselves, so the transparency simply never shows. Pick a solid background instead when the image will land somewhere that does not support transparency, because a PNG alpha channel flattened to white by someone else rarely lands where you wanted it.
Upload bigger than the display size
Platforms downscale; they do not upscale. Uploading at roughly twice the displayed size keeps the avatar crisp on high-density screens, and costs nothing but a slightly larger file. Borders and shadows
A thin border helps a circular image separate from a background of a similar tone - a light avatar on a light page, for instance. A drop shadow does the same job more loudly. Both are optional here, and both are worth skipping when the platform already draws its own ring around avatars.
